WASHINGTON, D.C. — EVHybridNoire Co-Founder, Dr. Shelley Francis, spoke today at the launch of the EPA’s proposed rulemaking, which outlines the strictest ever emissions standards for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles. At the announcement streamed here, Dr. Francis joined EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan in celebration of the historic step forward.
The proposed regulations impose stringent mandates on tailpipe emissions, which will radically change the face of the automotive industry. If the regulations pass, the EPA’s standards could result in more than 60% of new vehicles being electric by 2032. The standards would avoid nearly 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, save countless lives through reduced air pollution, and save the average consumer $12,000 over the lifetime of a light-duty vehicle. Thanks to advances in automotive technology, these standards are not only attainable but necessary.
Dr. Shelley Francis delivered remarks at EPA’s Washington, D.C. headquarters for the announcement. “The transportation sector has been the backbone of the American economy. It is the way we move people, goods, and services, and it impacts our daily lives by representing access to healthcare, education, good paying jobs, and economic inclusion,” she said. “EVHybridNoire applauds Administrator Regan and his team, as well as the Biden-Harris administration, for taking vehicle pollution seriously and ‘hitting the accelerator’ on strong vehicle standards.”
Given the recent federal investment to build out charging infrastructure across the country along with the individual financial incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act, the future has never looked brighter for zero-emission transportation. The proposed standards will work in tandem with recent federal legislation to accelerate that transition, bringing jobs, savings, and cleaner air to citizens across the country. Furthermore, black and brown communities are disproportionately exposed to harmful transportation emissions, making the robust commitment to electrification an environmental justice victory.
EVHybridNoire celebrates this powerful step toward widespread transportation decarbonization and will continue our work to center diversity, equity, and inclusion in the e-mobility narrative. It is imperative that the voices of millions of Americans who desire clean air and a healthy environment are heard, and that the proposed standards are ultimately enacted.
